Douglas Main is a freelance journalist covering wildlife, science, nature, and a range of environmental issues. He has written for The New York Times, The Atlantic, Scientific American, National Geographic, The Washington Post, Hakai Magazine, MIT Technology Review, Popular Science, and Newsweek, among others.

He was formerly a staff editor and senior writer with National Geographic, which provided the opportunity to report throughout the country— from covering mining impacts in Alaska, to moth-eating grizzlies in Montana; from Florida panther conservation in the Sunshine state, to exotic wildlife ranches in Texas. The environmental consequences of the border wall in southern Arizona have been a continual area of focus and interest over the years.

An Illinois native, Doug is now based between Ithaca, New York and Tucson, Arizona. When he’s not writing, he can usually be found painting, on an open basketball court, or nose-deep in moss inspection. He nurses an obsession with propagating his every-growing army of plants and could talk for hours about the magic of fungi.
